The Aintree racecourse first opened its doors on 7th July 1829 and hosts the prestigious annual Grand National horse race, one of the UKs biggest and most popular horse racing events. Aintree was originally used as a flat racing course, before the steeplechase was introduced in 1836. It is now considered to be one of the most difficult courses to complete successfully, it is home to some of the most lethal fences anywhere on the horse racing circuit. The course totals 4 miles and is known for hosting one of the UKs most flamboyant steeplechase horse races. Large crowds can flock to Aintree to savour the atmosphere and the ground is capable of happily containing an audience of 75,000. That’s a good capacity for any stadia and Aintree is one of the best in handling such vast crowds for a horse race. There’s no stipulated dress code for Aintree but dress smart, it’s the way of the horse race and is usually adopted by all race goers. The big event of the year at Aintree is obviously the National, on this day no sportswear or fancy dress is permitted. National day draws in the smartly dressed in hats to boot, it can become a showcase for the fashion conscious. A day out at Aintree is a treat on many fronts, this applies to cuisine and beverages too. On the big event days, you’ll find street food stalls serving traditional food stuffs to hog roasts. There’s a mobile costa too and a Champagne bar for your breakfast treat. Bottled drinks and the usual tapped beers are available, and the Champagne bars offers deli sandwiches along with hot dishes.

Best Course Winner

The most successful horse to run the Aintree racecourse is Red Rum, winning the Grand National on this circuit in 1973, 1974 and 1977. He also managed second place in the race in 1975 and 1976.

It was Donal McCain who trained Red Rum, running him along the beach at Southport, building up his stamina and getting him into the shape that made him a great victor.
