Leicester Racecourse

Located in the town of Oadby, just a few miles south of the course’s namesake city, Leicester Racecourse is a popular horse racing venue with a long and proud history.

The existence of a racetrack in this area of the East Midlands technically dates back to the early 1600s, but the course in its present location was first opened in 1883. Fast forward to the present day and Leicester Racecourse is a dual-purpose racetrack and plays host to both flat and National Hunt (jump) races, with upwards of 30 fixtures across its year-round racing calendar.

A few highlights amongst the annual Leicester Racecourse fixtures include the King Richard III Stakes on the flat course. This is also one of the most lucrative races in terms of prize money throughout the county. As well as this, there’s the Silver Fox Handicap Chase - a real gem in the jump fixtures.

In the last few decades the racecourse has seen additional investment which has been used to update and modernise large parts of the venue. It now boasts a variety of excellent facilities for racegoers including ‘The Kube’, its flagship 700 square metre event space.

Leicester Racecourse Betting

Leicester races of course offers plenty of opportunities for you to have a flutter. On the ground floor of the Grandstand you can find the main licensed betting shop, but if you want to head to the bookmakers there are several stalls located by the rails of the track and adjacent to the Grandstand. In addition to this, numerous Totepool outlets are also situated around the racecourse.

However, all Leicester horse racing fixtures now operate on a cashless basis. This applies to all food and drink outlets and the majority of the betting kiosks and outlets. You can use cash at selected locations but you’ll have to bring this into the venue as there are no cash machines onsite.

For a little extra help with your bets, Leicester racecards can also be purchased on the day of your chosen fixture and they are available online as a digital download.

Leicester Racecourse Map

Flat Racing at Leicester Racecourse

Leicester Racecourse Map

The flat course is a right-handed, galloping oval track that’s about a mile and three quarters long.

Stamina is said to be a key asset with the flat racing here, particularly with the seven furlong straight course that features a downhill run, before a gradual uphill climb for two furlongs and a level section for the final stretch.

Typically the ground is soft, but when wet it can become a much trickier test, even for seasoned runners.

Jump Racing at Leicester Racecourse

The jump course - similar to the flat - is right-handed, undulating and has a three furlong slight uphill rise on the approach to the finish. A solid jumping ability is of course needed to take on the fences, which although now smaller than they once were, are still challenging.

It’s believed that it can be advantageous to take a wider route on the hurdles races, particularly during wetter conditions. This is also partly because the flat track is also watered during the summer.
