Racing began in Wolverhampton in 1825 and moved to the current racecourse site in 1888. In 1994, Queen Elizabeth II re-opened the new Wolverhampton Racecourse, which was Britain's first floodlit racecourse at the time. Today, it is one of Britain’s busiest and it welcomes 120,000 visitors each year across 80 race fixtures, live music events and conferences.
Wolverhampton Racecourse hosts all-weather flat action all-year-round. Since 2014, it has used a high-performance Tapeta track.
The racecourse hosts two feature races each year. Both of these are hosted on the same day, at the start of March. The first is the Lincoln Trial, which is run over an extended mile and is open to four-year-olds and older. It’s a valuable handicap with a prize of over £30,000 for the winner. This race also serves as a preparation run for Doncaster’s long-standing Lincoln Handicap in April.
On the same afternoon, the racecourse stages the Lady Wulfruna Stakes, which is run over seven furlongs and is open to four-year-olds and upwards.

Many seasoned race-goers will tell you that the racing at Wolverhampton is all about quantity rather than quality. However, some very useful horses have won at the course. There are several Tote stations on-site at Wolverhampton Racecourse, as well as table service representatives in the hospitality section. On top of this, a number of bookmakers operate in the betting ring, which is between the Grandstand and the track. All of these accept cash and many also accept debit card payments.

Wolverhampton uses an all-weather Tapeta flat course, which forms a flat, left-handed oval circuit of just under a mile in length.
The bends on this course are fairly sharp and the straight is known for being narrow. As a result, it’s a track that favours horses with the ability to hold a good position as opposed to those who need time to find full stride.
The track's surface was changed in 2004 from fibresand to polytrack. This, in turn, was replaced by Tapeta during the summer of 2014.
Part of the spectacle of going to Wolverhampton races is being able to dress up for the occasion. For feature days such as Wolverhampton Ladies Day, dressing particularly smartly is highly recommended. On feature days such as this, ‘best dressed’ competitions are also held, so you may be rewarded for your fashion sense.
That said, you don’t have to wear a suit if you don’t want to. For gentlemen, the racecourse website recommends a smarter style, such as smart jeans, tailored shorts or a collared shirt. Although it does note that racegoers do tend to dress for the occasion.
Their only stipulation is that sporting shirts and offensive fancy dress outfits are not permitted. They also remind you that races take place all year round and in all kinds of weather, so you should also dress for the elements.
On top of this, if you’re in a hospitality area, the dress code is more formal. For example, in Horizons Restaurant, gentlemen must wear a collared shirt. If you’re booking hospitality, you can check the exact dress code with the racecourse when you book.
