Irish Cesarewitch Runner-by-Runner Guide

1. Stellar Mass

Trainer: J S Bolger

Jockey: Kevin Manning

Undoubtedly one of the classiest in the race with some near misses in Group 3's recently. However hasn't one since August 2006 and is top-weight. Unlikely.

2. Chelkar

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: Colin Keane

Last run that was to bad to be true was proven when found to be coughing post race. Major form claims prior to that and his fourth in the Ascot Stakes in some of the most solid in the context of this race.

3. Edlpour

Trainer: Alan Fleming

Jockey: Robbie Colgan

Has not run on the flat since 2015 and has only had two hurdles runs since then. The last of those was a commendable effort in May. A lightly raced horse that looks dangerous.

4. Nessun Dorma

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: WJ Lee

Handicapper may well have caught up with him following recent victory at Killarney. No doubt the horse is in top form but looks to be carrying too much weight.

5. Sharjah

Trainer: WP Mullins

Jockey: Seamie Heffernan

First run on Flat since 2016 back in September. Was a disappointing run and this looks a tough ask even based Galway Hurdle Win.

6. Cliffs of Doonene

Trainer: A P O'Brien

Jockey: Donnacha O'Brien

Least exposed horse in the race. Has already won twice from three starts and obvious excuses last time out. Had won over the distance before. Chance.

7. Brazos

Jockey: John Joseph Murphy

Trainer: Shane Foley

Likeable four-year-old who has already won twice this season, a shade disappointing last time out. Needs to find more in the context of this race.

8. Brex Drago

Trainer: Gavin Cromwell

Jockey: Gary Carroll

First run of the year on the flat and has not won on it since August 16. Coming off a three-timer over the smaller obstacles but victory looks unlikely here.

9. Ancient Sands

Trainer: John E Kiely

Jockey: Tom Madden (5)

Veteran at ten-years-old and coming off of a win. Has never won off a mark of 89 before and will be a tough ask to do so here. Madden takes off a valuable five but unlikely to be enough.

10. Exchange Rate

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: Ronan Whelan

Could be well weighted. Last months victory was penalty kick whilst only other flat run this year was solid performance. Each way chance.

11. Makitorix

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: Ben Coen (7)

One of Mullins weaker runners. Best of flat form not up to this level and is 1-10. Last hurdles run saw him finish 13/14 and horse is likely to be making up the numbers.

12. Pleasure Dome

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: J F Egan

Not one of the Mullins principals. Has never run in a handicap of this class and his best win is a Class 4 at Chester back in 2016. Hurdles have reinvigorated career but unlikely to hit the frame.

13. Davids Charm

Trainer: John J Walsh

Jockey: Rory Cleary

Seven-year-old only has four runs on the flat, the last of which was a victory of a lower grade Maiden. Looks to be carrying enough weight now upped in grade.

14. Decision Time

Trainer: John E Kiely

Jockey: Conor Hoban

Exposed looking runner who has disappointed in last two runs. Previous form to that was better and has won of this mark before.

15. Sandymount Duke

Trainer: Mrs John Harrington

Jockey: N G McCullagh

Nine-year-old has only had the three flat runs. First of which was a low grade victory before offering little after that. Has solid enough form over the hurdles but winning chances seem slim.

16. Waaheb

Trainer: Padraig Roche

Jockey: Alan Persse (7)

Oldest horse in the race. Galway specialist that has only run here once back in 2013. Was second that day off a mark of 78 and is unlikely to defy a mark of 82 five years on.

17. Miles To Memphis

Trainer: Mrs Denise Foster

Jockey: Jimmy Quinn

Out of form nine-year-old without a win for 15 months. A repeat of that victory would mean the horse is well-weighted, whether a repeat is likely however is another question.

18. Mr Everest

Trainer: A J Martin

Jockey: Sean Davis (5)

Five-year-old with strong form going into the race. Sean Davis nullifies the penalty for his impressive victory at Listowel last time out. Chance.

19. Newcross

Trainer: A J Martin

Jockey: Danny Sheehy (5)

Not fully exposed and lightly race five-year-old out of Cape Cross. Last two runs a major improvement on last season and is an interesting runner out of the Martin yard.

20. Western Boy

Trainer: P A Fahy

Jockey: Andrew Slattery (7)

Previous winner over the distance and obvious excuses last time out. Fair chance on best form but his best flat run was back in 2015. Could be well-weighted.

21. Like An Open Book

Trainer: John M Burke

Jockey: Julie Burke

Eight-year-old running of similar mark to underwhelming run in Listed Company last time out. Does have two wins to his name on the flat this season but this is mightily tougher.

22. Legal Spin

Trainer: W P Mullins

Jockey: Leigh Roche

Unexposed three-year-old who showed ability in first three runs. Last run can be ignored and hard for the handicapper to judge. Shouldn't be ignored.

23. Roseriver Has

Trainer: Noel Meade

Jockey: Killian Leonard (3)

Just the two runs on the flat, one of which was a win off of 61 back in May. Steady form in hurdles without getting head in front and would take a career best here.

24. Rockabill

Trainer: Joseph Patrick O'Brien

Jockey: Wayne Lordan

Another of the fields three-year-olds. Thinks have clicked and has won his last two runs, the last of which a victory in big field handicap at the Curragh. Handicapper looks to have been lenient and could be a threat off bottom weight.

25. Marine One

Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan

Jockey: Mark Gallagher

Four-year-old maiden who looks to be going backwards if anything. Has a fine pedigree out of Frankel but has shown little of that on the racetrack.
