Still unsure why you could bet each way at Cheltenham? Well, if you’re new to the world of betting, then some of the terminology may have confused you. To help you decide whether each way betting is right for you, we’ve answered a number of frequently asked questions:
What is an Each Way Bet?
When you place an each way bet at Cheltenham, you effectively place two bets: one on your horse to win and another on it to place. These bets are placed evenly.
So, if you place a £2.50 each way bet at Cheltenham, it will cost you £5. This is because you’re placing one bet for £2.50 on the horse ‘to win’ and one bet for £2.50 on the horse ‘to place’ (this is usually the minimum stake amount).
If your horse then goes on to win the race, you’ll win both parts of the bet. However, if it fails to win but still places (the number of place positions is determined by the size of the field), you’ll lose the ‘to win’ part of the bet but you’ll still get paid out on the ‘to place’ part.
How are the Winnings for Each Way Bets Calculated?
The way the odds are calculated on an each way bet is slightly different from how they’re calculated on a ‘to win’ bet. This is because the ‘to place’ bet is given as a fraction of the odds of the ‘to win’ bet.
The amount the ‘to place’ part of your bet is worth depends on the odds of your selected horse and how many places are available. But let’s look at an example to give you a clearer idea of how the process works…
Say you place a £2.50 each way bet at Cheltenham on a horse that’s 20/1 and the race pays up to four places. Then, the race finishes and your horse comes second.
In this scenario, the £2.50 you bet on your horse ‘to win’ loses. So you lose your £2.50 stake. However, the £2.50 you bet on your horse ‘to place’ wins.
The ‘to place’ part of your bet is settled by dividing the odds you received (in this case 20/1) by the fraction offered before the race (in this case four places).
So, rather than the full 20/1 price you would have received if your horse won the race, you instead receive 5/1 (20/1 divided by four). This means you’d receive £12.50 plus your stake. This would result in a total return of £15.
If your horse had won the race, both parts of your bet would have landed. In this scenario the breakdown of your winnings would have been as follows:
- £2.50 at 20/1 to win - £50 (plus stake)
- £2.50 at 5/1 to place - £12.50 (plus stake)
- Total winnings - £62.50 (plus stake)
- Total winnings including stake - £67.50
Crucially though, you’re not guaranteed to win with an each way bet. If your horse finished outside the designated places in this scenario, you’d lose £5.
What’s the Difference Between a ‘To Win’ and an ‘Each Way’ Bet?
If you place a ‘to win’ bet, you can only claim your winnings if your horse wins the race. An each way bet is different.
When you place an each way bet at Cheltenham, you actually place two bets at an equal cost. One of these is a bet for your horse ‘to win’ a race and the other is for it to finish within a certain number of places specified by the bookmaker beforehand.
The ‘to win’ part of your bet will give you the full odds for that horse. However, the ‘to place’ part of your bet is settled by dividing the odds by the fraction offered before the race. For instance, if the race pays three places, your odds will be divided by three. If four places are paid, your odds will be divided by four. This information will clearly be displayed on your betslip.
