Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby’s colt, Adayar, heads the market here on the back of his exploits last time out in the Classic Trial at Sandown (10f).

The son of Frankel finished a 1/2 length 2nd in the Group 3 contest, keeping on well from the rear of the field and improving for the step up in trip, making him the pick of the form coming into the Derby trial.

That run signified that the step up to 12f today looks sure to suit and he also had re-opposing rivals Recovery Run and Etonian well behind him that day, so should assert dominance over the pairing once more.

He’ll strip much fitter for his comeback run and can continue progression once more here for the Buick/Appleby partnership who will be looking to add to their 2018 Derby success with Masar.

Aidan O’Brien has won 6 of the last 9 renewals of the Epsom Derby so it’s no surprise to see money come for any representative of his within the Lingfield trial by which he has also won 5 times prior.

O’Brien runner, Kyprios, won on debut, overcoming testing conditions to land his maiden at Galway.

He was subsequently thrown into the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket (10f) and went off favourite that day, although only managed to finish a well beaten 6th.

He scored at Cork (10f) on his reappearance to mark the start of his 3year old season, always doing enough to win by an eventual half length and should benefit once more from the step up in trip and the fitness test that run gave him.

He’s bred to be much higher rated than his current mark being a son of Galileo, the most successful source of Group 1 winners in history and being the 8th foal of Polished Gem to reach a rating above 100, the most successful being 128 rated Prince of Wales stakes winner Free Eagle.

Looks to be a lot more to come from him and should give a good account of himself with Ryan Moore on board.

Ralph Beckett
Age: 3
Weight: 9-0
OR: 89
Days: 23

Ralph Beckett is in great form currently and is represented in the market by sole entrant, Scope who ran home a decent winner on debut in testing conditions at Newbury (8f).

He was subsequently rested and returned with a comeback run at Newmarket over 10f by which he managed a 1/2 length 2nd behind Al Waqidi under a penalty, keeping on well from 1f out.

He should appreciate step up in trip being out of Teofilo, although it must be noted that his half sister Regardez looked stretched at the distance in her efforts for the Oaks.

Carlisle Bay

The second representative of A P O’Brien is Carlisle Bay, also out of the all classy Galileo.

Carlisle Bay won impressively on debut beating 400/1 shot Magic Carousel at Tipperary over 9f.

He subsequently ran in the Group 3 Eyrefield stakes (9f) at Leopardstown, going off as favourite and finished a 3/4 length 3rd in a tightly run affair.

He is a half sister to Alluringly, out of half sister to Oaks runner up Wonder of Wonders, showing that the step up to a mile and a half should suit based on pedigree and this run will mark his first exposure as a 3 year old.

Will be eager to see his progression during the layoff and does have a bit to prove in terms of race fitness despite the always eye-catching booking of Frankie Dettori on board.

Third Realm represents the in form Roger Varian yard who has had a steady flow of winners since the beginning of the 2021 flat season.

Third Realm was off the mark at the second time of asking upon being upped in trip to 10f last time out at Nottingham in a maiden, running on well and winning going away.

He is sure to appreciate the further increase in distance on offer today being a son of Sea The Stars and will strip much fitter after his comeback run last time out.

Despite this, he looks to have the most to find form wise in this field and this race is a huge step up in class in comparison to his opening runs.

It remains to be seen whether he is up to this level currently.

Andrew Balding
Age: 3
Weight: 9-0

Andrew Balding is another trainer in fantastic form currently and he is represented by Recovery Run in the race.

The colt is easily the most experienced runner in the field with 7 runs prior, including wins at 8f before a good 2nd placed finish when upped to 10f in the Zetland Stakes, going clear with Lone Eagle.

His comeback run for his 3 year old season was less impressive however and he finished 9th of 10 in the classic trial behind re-opposing  rivals Adayar and Etonian.

He may of needed the run to get back into the swing of things, however will still need to take a huge step forward to be back on terms with the market leader Adayar based on that run.
