⚫ Newbury (12:05) - Liam Swagger
⚫ Newbury (12:40) - Roysse
⚫ Newbury (13:50) - Buckna
⚫ Newbury (15:00) - Beau Balko
Liam Swagger should prove hard to beat in the opener at Newbury on Wednesday. The James Owen yard is striking at 20% over the last two weeks, and Sam Twiston-Davies is booked to take the ride today.
The three-year-old was a competitive performer on the flat before turning his attention to obstacles in September. Was a smart winner over hurdles on his debut, beating Torrent by four lengths over an extended two miles.
Stepped up on his latest effort when beating Static by a neck in listed company over two miles at Wetherby. One to beat.
Roysse is the contender for the Ben Pauling yard in the maiden hurdle at 12:40 today. The five-year-old was a disappointing favourite on his hurdles debut over course and distance at the start of last month, finishing four lengths behind Hartington.
However, he likely needed that run after a 289-day break. Was a proven runner in bumpers last season, including when winning on soft ground over an extended two miles at Newbury in January, beating Jurancon by over two lengths.
Sets the standard, and is preferred to make amends.
Buckna is an interesting contender in the 13:50 at Newbury today. The Warren Greatrex yard has been among the winners in recent weeks, striking at a 29% rate over the last 14 days.
In-form jockey James Bowen is booked to ride the four-year-old on Wednesday.
He was an expensive purchase for connections after winning an Irish point in March, and produced a decent effort on his rules debut when four lengths second behind Admiral Stewart over two miles at Ffos Las.
Entitled to come on from that effort, and looks a big chance on ratings.
Beau Balko represents the Paul Nicholls yard in the handicap chase, due off at 15:00 today. The six-year-old will have Ben Bromley aboard today, and has won twice from nine starts over fences.
Was an impressive winner over the bigger obstacles in early November, beating Tedley by two lengths over two miles and four at Wincanton.
Didn't fire after being stepped back in distance on his latest effort over two miles at Newbury, finishing nine lengths behind General Medrano. Will relish being back up to two miles and four today.
