Alan Mulligan, stable lad to trainer Luke Comer who was the handler of the 300/1 winner He Knows No Fear at Leopardstown on Thursday, has become €36,000 richer after landing the huge 300/1 gamble.
The three year old He Knows No Fear managed to get up on the line under a great ride by Chris Hayes at odds of 300/1 with the favourite Agitare for Jim Bolger looking the clear winner with a furlong to go but in the final strides the outsider managed to track him down and land the race.
Mulligan, having known the capabilities of the horse from being in the yard placed a €100 each-way bet at 300/1 and watched on with glee as the three year old got up in a photo finish.
Trainer Luke Comer is not only known for being a trainer but is also one of the most wealthiest men in Ireland having had extreme success being a property developer and to top things off he also owned the horse.
He had not tasted victory on the Flat for nine years being a handler and He Knows No Fear did not look like the type to end that poor run having raced once before at Limerick and only being able to finish 12th of 14 runners.
Winning punter Mulligan said after his win: “There was always scope in him. Seeing him on the gallops and what he’s doing, you had to do something. If he didn’t win, I was confident of a place.”
