Last year's renewal took centre stage yesterday in our throwback race but the year before that was also something special with Sir Michael Stoute dominating the race with two well bred animals and both of them giving it everything up until the line.
Poet's Word and Crystal Ocean were the two favourites for the race on the day but both of them were ridden very different with Crystal Ocean going from the front under William Buick, where as Poet's Word was dropped right out the back by James Doyle.
Two contrasting styles but it made for a great spectacle as Buick went for home quite early trying to run the race out of the field and it looked as though he had done it.
James Doyle had to get going on his mount and with a furlong to go the two horses pulled up side by side with Poet's Word just narrowly managing to do more in the final stages.
What a race it was between the stablemates.
