The feature race of Newbury’s card on the 29th December is the Grade 1 Challow Novices Hurdle over 2m4f, and the last three winners of the race being Bravemansgame, Thyme Hill and Champ so this race does usually throw up some very nice prospects further down the line who go on to become decent stayers over both codes.

The race this year looks no different and there are a few very nice types in this again, the current favourite Stage Star does look a nice prospect being 2 for 2 over hurdles in his debut season over obstacles winning both races by a combined 13 and a half lengths.

He is yet to contest in any Graded races as yet but is trained by Paul Nicholls who has won this race three times in the past including last year with Bravemansgame and Denman in the past. So, this is a springboard for some top horses coming through the team at Ditch heat.

As previously mentioned, Stage Star is yet to contest in any black type races but couldn’t have won his first two starts over hurdles in better fashion, jumping well and seeming to get better with each run, the potential of this horse could be very high and he is a very exciting novice hurdler for the season ahead. We expect champion trainer Paul Nicholls to equal the record and win this for a fourth time.

Trainer To Follow - Samuel Drinkwater

A young trainer starting to make a noise in the training ranks is Samuel Drinkwater who has his horses in superb form at the moment, operating at a brilliant 44% strike rate in the last 14 days, saddling 4 winners with just 9 runners, operating at a run to form rate of 88%, one of the highest around at the moment.

With his current season tally of 10 winners so far, 4 winners of which coming in the last two weeks shows how well Samuel has his horses running now.

The team have two runners at Newbury on the 29th, both mounts having fantastic chances, but Gallic Geordie being the main chance of the day.

A horse who is on a winning streak at the moment, looking for a quick-fire hat-trick of wins, both of his previous wins coming from Lingfield.

Adam Wedge booked to ride is a statement of intent and this horse could get another win to his name running off the same mark as his last win at Lingfield just 9 days ago.

Jockey To Follow - Aidan Coleman

Aidan Coleman is quickly becoming one of the top jockeys in the National Hunt scene and already has some top horses to ride for the season ahead with Jonbon and Epatante.

With him coming back from his ban on the 28th to go over to Leopardstown to ride, he will be looking to get back on track riding plenty of winners for the season ahead. Before his ban he was riding in top form (Current strike rate is 60% with 3 winners in just 5 rides in the last 14 days).

Aidan has three rides at Newbury on the 29th all of which are in with a great chance, His main ride being Go Dante for Olly Murphy in the Grade 1 Challow Novices Hurdle.

Aidan is the number 1 stable jockey for Olly Murphy and has ridden plenty of winners in the past for him, Go Dante ran well in a novice hurdle last time out and was beaten by a nice-looking Nicky Henderson horse.

He knows this horse and he could go well in this.
