Southwell Races

Southwell is one of the busiest racecourses in the UK and hosts nearly 60 race meetings a year. This is because it stages races on both an all-weather Tapeta course and a turf course. Both flat races and jump races are held here.

Southwell racecourse is associated with female jockey Hayley Turner, who grew up locally. She also rode in her first race at Southwell.

Southwell Racecourse is also unique. After all, not many racecourses can say they have a 9-hole golf course in the centre of the course!

Where is Southwell Racecourse?

Southwell Racecourse is located two miles east of the town of Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England. As one of only six racecourses in the UK to have an all-weather track, it’s considered to be one of the premier sporting venues in the East Midlands.

Southwell Racecourse Betting

Many people consider betting to be a true tradition of horse racing and something that brings true excitement to a day at the races.

If you fancy a flutter while you’re at Southwell, then you’ll be pleased to hear that there are lots of ways you can do just that. If you’d like to bet online, then you can use the racecourse’s free Wi-Fi to access your favourite betting apps.

Alternatively, you can either bet with the bookies that are in front of the grandstand in the betting ring, or bet via the Tote (a pool betting option that is similar to the lottery).

Please be aware that although cash is accepted by bookmakers and the Tote, there are no cash machines on-site at the racecourse. So, if you’d like to bet with cash, you’ll need to bring it with you.

Southwell Racecourse Maps

Flat Racing (All-Weather) at Southwell Racecourse

Southwell Racecourse Map

Southwell’s all-weather course is made from Tapeta. It goes left-handed in a mile and a quarter oval, which has a run from the home turn of three furlongs and a spur to provide a straight five furlongs. In many ways, it’s the perfect equivalent of a left-hand American track and races here are invariably run at a good gallop, so stamina is vital.

This course also features a state-of-the-art LED floodlight system, so evening racing is held on this course. The all-weather course runs outside the turf course and it is flanked by floodlights that allow for evening racing.

The Turf Course at Southwell Racecourse

Southwell’s turf track is left-handed and tight. It’s used almost exclusively for jump racing, but the occasional flat race is held on this course from time to time.

The character of this course changes markedly depending on the underfoot conditions. While speed is vital when the ground is firm, it’s all about endurance and stamina when the ground is heavy and races in these conditions often result in very few finishers.

The fences on this course are portable and they’re stiff for a minor track. The brush-type hurdles penalise less-fluent jumping and the track is at the upper end for fallers and unseats.

The course is generally thought to be one of the best-maintained turf courses in Britain and it rewards tactically astute jockeys who can lead their horse into a handy position.

Southwell Racecourse Dress Code

Southwell is known for its fairly casual approach to racing; particularly for all-weather racing. However, in some hospitality areas, a stricter dress code is in place.

There’s a relaxed dress code in the Grandstand. The racecourse simply stipulates that you do not wear sporting team shirts or offensive fancy dress. They also discourage ripped jeans.

However, the racecourse adds that race meetings at Southwell are predominantly outdoor events, and that you should be mindful of the weather when deciding what to wear.

Meanwhile, in the hospitality areas (including Seasons Restaurant), a smarter style is recommended. But, you don’t need to wear a suit and tie. Here, the racecourse recommends smart jeans or tailored shorts and a collared shirt for the gentlemen. Again, their only stipulation is that sporting team shirts and offensive fancy dress are not permitted. Again, ripped jeans are also discouraged.

How to Get to Southwell Racecourse

Southwell Racecourse is located on Occupation Lane and there’s plenty of parking nearby. Just put the following information in your sat nav:

Southwell Racecourse

Occupation Lane

Rolleston

Nottinghamshire

NG25 0TS

Tel: 01636 814481

However, anyone attempting to reach the racecourse by road must be aware that, due to local authority restrictions, Occupation Lane and Station Road in Rolleston cannot be used as a means of access for Sunday and all floodlit race meetings. On these occasions, the yellow diversion signage must be followed.

Many racegoers visiting Southwell come via train. This is because Rolleston Train Station is adjacent to the racecourse and lies on the Nottingham to Lincoln line. On many race days, extra trains operate.

If you like, you can also reach Southwell Racecourse by bus (take the number 26 from Nottingham Bus Station) or by taxi.
