Uttoxeter Racecourse, located in rural Staffordshire, holds jump meetings throughout the year. The racecourse was built and opened in 1907, after nearby Keele Park Racecourse closed.
The most popular Uttoxeter Racecourse fixtures are the Midlands Grand National in March and the Summer Cup, which is usually run in either late June or early July.
First run in 1969, the four mile and two furlong Listed Midlands Grand National is a key pointer to the Grand National. Back in 1975, Rag Trade won the race for trainer Fred Rimell before tasting glory at Aintree the following season. Additionally, the Midlands Grand National was also won by subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised in 2010.
The Summer Cup is run over 3m 2f and replaced the half-mile longer Summer National in 2012. Added to this, the racecourse regularly holds winter meetings, which are well attended.
Champion Jockey AP McCoy made history at Uttoxeter Races in 2002, when he won his 1700th race aboard Mighty Montefalco. This win made McCoy the all-time leading National Hunt jockey (he went on to win more than 4,300 races before retiring).

The jumps racing track at Uttoxeter is left-handed. Although it’s sharp in nature, the track has gained a reputation for being gruelling in winter. As a result, an ability to see out the trip is of paramount importance.
Uttoxeter is usually a quick track, so it puts a premium on a horse’s ability to travel on the bridle. Experienced jockeys here also regularly go wide down the back straight, because there’s actually a little bit of an ’S’ configuration there. Due to this, the shortest way is not necessarily on the inside.
Although horses here can win from almost anywhere as the home straight is long and flat, it’s a course that usually favours the front runners (particularly when the going is on the firm side during summer).
The fences at Uttoxeter are no more than average in terms of their stiffness and many casualties here simply occur as a result of fatigue in the latter stages of the race.
There’s no set dress code at Uttoxeter races, but the racecourse says that many racegoers tend to adopt a smarter style. As a result, the racecourse suggests smart jeans or tailored shorts and a collared shirt for gentlemen. The only items that cannot be worn are sporting team shirts and offensive fancy dress.
The racecourse also notes that many customers choose to dress for the occasion on feature race days. On these occasions, prizes for the best outfit are often handed out, so it’s well worth dressing to impress.
Finally, the racecourse reminds punters that race meetings at Uttoxeter are predominantly outdoor events, and that you should be mindful of the weather when deciding what to wear.
