It's Derby day at Epsom on Saturday, with a bumper card featuring the Group One classic, we've gone through every race on the afternoon and picked out a selection it may pay to follow.
Epsom Racing Preview 01/06/24
Hong Kong Jockey Club Lester Piggott Handicap 13.25 - Persica
Richard Hannons 3 year old got off the mark at Salisbury last season over 6 furlongs before going on to score in handicap company over a mile.
He made a pleasing return to action this season when coming 3rd in a deep looking contest at Kempton, won by 2000 Guineas hero Notable Speech. A staying on 4th in a deep renewal of the London Gold Cup when last seen at Newbury, they look smart pieces of form going into this.
Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes 14:00 - Royal Dress
Some muddling form in handicaps last season over 6 and 7 furlongs was very suddenly left behind when making seasonal and stable debut at Goodwood on soft ground at the start of May to win a listed contest over a mile.
The extra distance seemingly pulled out some improvement going from being rated 87 to now being rated 102. The form of the win looking decent, she might even take another step forward on this similarly configured course and the slight extra distance.
Group Three Diomed Stakes 14:35 - Regal Reality
Surprisingly hitting a consistent vein of form despite his age, Regal Reality claimed this race 12 months ago and returns in similarly strong looking form looking to defend his win.
Sir Michael Stoute’s 9 year old has been shaping well on his outings this season, coming 4th on seasonal comeback in a strong looking Group Three and blew his chances at the start last time out at Chester, starting slowly before running into 3rd.
3YO "Dash" Handicap 15:10 - Billy Webster
Arrives here looking well treated off a mark of 90 with a 5lbs claimer in the saddle as the gelding is 3 from 3 over 5 furlongs.
Most recently been trying 6 furlong handicaps, he’s not been disgraced to be 5th in some big field handicap events.
Aston Martin "Dash" Handicap 15:45 - Dream Composer
A relatively consistent sprinting sort for connections, Dream Composer has shown a tendency to handle the very sharp sprint track at Goodwood and should be able to handle the fast 5 furlongs here at Epsom just as well.
Ran well 8 days ago to be 2nd by a neck over 5 furlongs at Goodwood, he looks to back that up quickly but should have the pace and ability to handle this speedy test.
Group One Betfred Derby 16:30 - Ancient Wisdom
City Of Troy looks a vulnerable favourite at the top of the market and the value from Los Angeles’ price has all but dried up, Ancient Wisdom provides some value at 13/2 in the market for the Derby.
A top juvenile for connections last season, running five times he claimed four wins including Group Three and Group One events, seemingly appreciating soft underfoot conditions.
Long Shot Northern Dancer Handicap 17:15 - Lucander
Stayed on powerfully from the back to be a close 3rd in this race last year off a mark of 103 and lines up this year off 1lbs lower.
Has spent the spring over in Bahrain running well in listed events over 10 to 12 furlongs, getting his head in front over 10 furlongs in a handclap event.
JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap 17:50 - Apollo One
Kept running well in defeat last season despite an ever rising handicap mark. Went well in a number of high quality sprinting handicaps including a close defeat in this race last year.
Went well on reappearance again to be 2nd by a length and should shape better with that effort in the books.
