Newbury Racecourse is one of the country’s finest tracks and it has a long and prestigious history in the sport. It’s been home to horse racing on the current site for over 100 years and today remains as popular as ever, staging both flat and jump races across the year.
Just a few of the main events held at the course include ‘The Lockinge Stakes’ which is a Grade 1 flat race for horses aged four and over. This has seen some of the most-famous horses in racing history take to the track, with a notable example in recent times being Frankel.
Another claim to fame for Newbury Racecourse is that it was a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth II. She celebrated her 86th birthday at the course and watched two of her own horses running.
With a 12-month calendar chock full of fantastic meets and events, the racing at Newbury of course offers both casual and seasoned racegoers alike plenty of opportunities to have a flutter.
Across all areas of the course, including the Grandstand, other stands and enclosures, you can find a variety of Totepool counters. For the uninitiated, the Tote doesn’t involve you betting against a bookmaker, instead your stake enters a pool and how much you end up winning depends on how many other winning tickets have been entered for that particular race. Equally, there are plenty of bookmakers to be found in the betting ring that’s located in front of the Grandstand.
It’s important to note that Newbury Racecourse is now cashless, apart from at the Tote stands and the trackside bookmakers - although some will accept debit cards. There are now also no cash machines available at the course, so you will need to bring cash with you if you want to use it.
For those of you who wish to bet via your own devices and apps, free Wi-Fi is available for all racegoers. On top of this, if you want some additional tips or a memento from your time at the track, Newbury racecards can be purchased before or at your chosen event for £4.

The flat course is a left-handed, galloping track that’s just shy of two miles in length.
It’s considered one of the UK’s fairest courses and lends itself to strong, long-striding horses. It also has one of the country’s longest and widest home straights and has slight undulating terrain throughout. It’s said the track tends to get much more challenging in wet weather.
The jump course covers the oval of the flat track and as such is also left-handed and galloping with some undulations throughout. However, it’s known for having stiff fences, meaning horses with decent stamina are more likely to do well here, whether it’s the hurdles or steeplechase events.

The official guidance from Newbury Racecourse itself claims that they want visitors and racegoers to feel ‘comfortable’ when at an event, however, there are also three different dress codes in place. These are:
For the Premier Enclosure
Smart attire, which can include shorts, denim and trainers providing they are indeed ‘smart’ and not ripped. Any fancy dress or sports apparel (e.g. team strips/colours) are not allowed in this area.
For the Grandstand and Racegoers Restaurant
This is a more ‘relaxed’ dress code and fancy dress is permitted so long as it isn’t offensive. Sports apparel/team colours are also not allowed in this area.
For any under 12s
There are no dress codes in place for this age group.
