Goodwood Races
There’s some history to Goodwood, the origins of this racecourse date back to the 17th century when the first Duke of Richmond purchased a hunting lodge at Goodwood. The second Duke built the stables in 1758, where runners are still accommodated to this day.
It was the third Duke of Richmond who launched flat horse racing here in 1802. Over the centuries, events, weddings and fantastic horse racing fixtures have abounded at historic Goodwood. The first two-day outing was such a success that the following year saw the introduction of a three-day event.
In more modern times Goodwood has grown into a popular race meeting, with some 55,000 spectators attending popular July meeting’s.
The course maintains an essential English charm, and with the efforts of the current Duke, with his son, the atmosphere and character look to be maintained and enhanced to their fullest potential.

Goodwood Enclosures
There are three enclosures at Goodwood; The Richmond, Gordon and Lennox enclosures. The most prestigious enclosure, with luxurious champagne bars throughout, is The Richmond Enclosure. Exclusive only to Members and their guests, during the Goodwood Festival, it offers private boxes, and offers fantastic views of the racecourse and parade ring. Formal wear and high-brow etiquette is a must for this top-end enclosure at Goodwood. The Gordon Enclosure is only a little less formal than the Richmond Enclosure and offers Parade Ring access, with a standing view from the March Grandstand. There’s a reputable Bistro and bars throughout along with covered seats from the Sussex Stand. Access to The Gordon Enclosure also gives you full access to The Lennox Enclosure.
With a relaxed and family feel and open lush ground for the picnic contingent, is The Lennox Enclosure. There are many outlets offering beverages and food throughout this enclosure too. However, this area is extremely popular with families who arrive with picnics and accessories to boot. There’s a strict policy to ensure no glass bottles or alcohol is carried in. If the day does turn out to be a wash out, which has been known to happen on a summer's afternoon in England, then covered terraces are accessible.
Described as a “garden party with racing tacked on” by the late King Edward VII, Goodwood has become a place for a unique and quintessential English style of fashion. The Festival is where you’ll see hats and ladies looking colourful and bright, which fits in beautifully with the setting.
The Richmond Enclosure does come with a dress code that demands no jeans and a panama hat is favourable. The two other enclosures have no strict clothing guidelines, but all are encouraged to dress to impress.
The racecourse offers a great day out for the family and beautiful eateries and bars that will impress your guests or party.
